JP Instruments JP181 oboe outfit

Owing to the relatively low demand for double reed woodwinds, all oboe makers still build each instrument by hand which drives costs up and means there are many design variations. By using cheaper materials and automating some of the process, the experts at John Packer have finally managed to put out a range of affordable oboes that perform as well as many much more expensive instruments.

The JP181MKII is a brilliantly designed student oboe at an honest price and features a complete dual keywork system with semi automatic octaves and silver plated plateau keys. Now in its second generation, white leather pads and improved cork make for a more durable and quieter setup, and the overall layout of keys and adjustment screws has been greatly improved. Of particular note is the inclusion of a left hand F key which only tends to be found on more advanced oboes.

The ebonite hard rubber body isn't affected by temperature or humidity and is impervious to cracking which is a common problem with wooden instruments. Despite its relative cheapness, it responds just like a wooden alternative, with a beautiful warm tone and large dynamic range. The scale is even and smooth, and all the awkward intervals slur effortlessly and reliably making this model equal to many pricier intermediate instruments.

As with all John Packer outfits this instrument is supplied with a high quality moulded carry case. It also comes with cleaning materials but < this oboe outfit does NOT include a reed. We recommend a medium soft reed for students - use the links on the right to browse through our selection.
